Convention Campaign Coalition

Consultations
Various organisations - from within and outside government - often seek the views of interested parties and, whilst various names are used for such processes, the most commonly used phrase is 'consultation'.
Whilst consultation exercises can be an extremely useful way of ensuring that the views of disabled people and other interested parties are obtained, please be aware that if you respond to a consultation exercise:
- Your views may be published for others to see, and
- Having responded to one consultation, you may find that the organisation concerned contacts you, directly, in future.
I emphasise this not to put you off, but to ensure that you understand what responding to a consultation might mean. If you feel that you have something to contribute - and disabled people certainly need to be able influence public policy - and you do not think that either of the issues listed, above, is a concern, you should! Good ideas are not confined to professionals or academics!
The Office for Disability Issues Independent Living Review provides a perfect example of the benefits flowing from the direct influence of disabled people.
I will never include anything that claims to be a consultation exercise, but is nothing of the sort, so you need have no fears that you will find yourself drawn into a marketing or direct-seliing campaign!
